Early morning harvest of Lot Natalie 12 for distillation. |
Once a fellow lavender grower told me that when people asked him if he would buy their lavender, he replied, Do you really want me to come and cut it back just when it is its most beautiful? Usually the answer was maybe not!
But that is what we do! We leave some for the bees, but most of the once vibrantly purple lavender plants look like kids’ heads with bad haircuts. I always want those near the house to be the last to go. Their brilliance and the buzzing of busy bees transport me beyond everyday matters as I brush past on the way to the barn.
But when I smell the oil, I remember.
