Leopold’s Land Ethic

Perhaps the most stirring phrase I heard throughout the Geography of Hope Conference this weekend in Point Reyes Station was Aldo Leopold’s land ethic.  For three days we listened to some of the top conservationists and ecologists in the country talk and argue about an ethic that asserts that healing our earth is integral to healing our relationships with each other, and healing our relationships with each other is integral to healing our earth. Both must happen simultaneously.  Community and conservation go hand in hand.

I return to our ranch thinking more about our neighbors and the importance of connection with them in protecting the fragile ecosystem of this mountain side.
