Road Work

Loading gravel into dump trailer to take to road.

Road Work

It feels like the necessary sacrifice to have a road to our home: this tending of it. It is a gravelly road, one that follows an old wagon trail and then trade route west, and it goes through fragile ground. In rain we have to watch it like a hawk as one branch stopping up the ditch (lined with stone) can wash out a ton of gravel. This month we are adding new gravel to the steep parts that have become clay-slick. (We tell friends arriving: as in life, do not hesitate!)

Following the dump trailer after gravel has been released.

This road, though, is an induction to our ranch, one that slows us down and reminds us of who else lives here.
