The Season to Keep Your Car Doors Locked!
My brother says this is the time of year that when you go to town, you better keep your car doors locked. Otherwise you will end up with somebody else’s abundance sitting on your front seat, to add to your own!
It is one of the most productive times in the garden: tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, melons, squash, squash, squash, not to mention orchard trees full of bounty.
When I was a child in the Midwest, my father would bring in bushel baskets full of peaches or apples to be canned or frozen. For my mother this was a little like going to town and leaving your doors unlocked! It meant that within the day she had to cut and cook and can and freeze a year’s worth of fruit. It was July and August work, and it supplied us with almost everything we ate.
How is it so many of us have forgotten how to grow and preserve our own food? It is a skill wise to cultivate again. We then know how it grew and was processed, that it was preserved in containers that will not make us sick. Working with the seasonal bounty in this way not only nourishes, it also reconnects us with the earth and her seasons.
