Lot Number Goatsong 11
This year 2011 most of the lavender we cut to dry came from field Goatsong, an area between our house and the labyrinth. This lavender grows in thin topsoil and the plants have grown more slowly over the years. But even now, at age 12, they are putting out the long stems we need for bouquet making.
Goatsong: When I was writing the novel which I later named Goatsong, one of the senior analysts at our professional institute told me that the word “goatsong” is the Greek word for “tragedy”: tragos, meaning “goat” and oida, meaning “song”, tragōidia. Goatsong is the mysterious combination of humility and the resilience to climb above, like a goat, or a song! We named this field Goatsong because its stunning beauty humbles us on a daily basis, reminding us of what needs to be sacrificed— and what should not— and why we farm in the ways we do.
